India’s First Bevacizumab Biosimilar and Hetero’s Pride

India's First Biosimilar of Bevacizumab approved by DGCI was launched in the year 2016 by Hetero. Cizumab is a complex protein structure manufactured using multiple state-of-the-art-methods, which is used for managing multiple solid tumors. Unlike most other cancer drugs available in the market which are chemical based Cizumab is a Biosimilar

Bevacizumab, a monoclonal antibody (MAB) is made from living cells.
They are structurally large and complex molecules and are carefully monitored during development for consistent quality.

How does Cizumab work?

Cizumab is an anti-angiogenic drug. That is, it prevents the formation of new blood vessels. It blocks a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF which is involved in angiogenesis. Normal cells also make VEGF, but cancer cells make excess VEGF at the site of the tumour. This for an increased blood supply to help the tumour grow. By blocking VEGF Cizumab prevents the growth of new blood vessels that feed tumors. Due to this the tumour will starve and ill not be able to grow.
Unlike chemotherapy that attacks the cancer cells, the purpose of Cizumab is to block the blood supply that feeds the tumor which will prevent the tumour grow.
